- Dear Brian,
- thank you for your answer. However I am no longer a C expert, therefore I
- would like to ask other info-hams participants if they can help to clear up
- the address problem so that everyone can benefit.

- You're right. Should I stop sending out the digests until I have time
- to fix the software? Or would you like to fix it for me? Source is

- Need the mixer crystals to add 17 and 12 Meters to a Ten-Tec 580 Delta.
- Ten-Tec no longer carries these crystals. Might be interested in a non-
- functional Delta which has these crystals.
- Thanks - Dave.

-
- Bill, you've hit several nails on the head. First, the CB boom *did*
- have a very negative impact on peoples' views of outdoor antennas. Most
- areas of the country didn't have restrictive covenants in the '60s when
- the boom begain; a lot of very ugly CB antenna popped up in a lot of
- housing developments, and this led to the idea in "planned" communities
- of the "no outside antenna" rule. The concept has spread to most new
- developments, even those adjacent to older developments where no such
- restrictions apply; the advent of satellite dishes has only exacerbated
- the problem.
-
- Of course, CB has died down considerably, and hams are such a small
- percentage of the population that for every ham who says "I won't buy
- a house here because of your covenants" there are probably several hundred
- perspective buyers who'll say, "Oh, you have cable? Great! Where do I
- sign?"
-
- This may change as direct satellite brodcast grows in popularity,
- because then you will be talking about a much larger segment of the
- general population having an interest in an outside antenna, but even
- then it will have to be a situation where the antennas are fairly
- small; I'll wager that *very few* "average citizens" care for *big*
- antennas in their yard, but something no bigger than 24" in diameter
- and roof-mounted wouldn't be viewed as that much of an eyesore (at
- least, not as long as it's hooked up to *their* TV!).
-
- One other consideration is safety. In some jurisdictions, the
- possibility of your ham tower falling on someone else's property can
- affect the way that municipalities view such structures. And, of
- course, if you make an enemy out of your neighbors they'll have a
- lawyers telephone number handy, ready to sue you at the first instance
- of part of your antenna striking their house/tree/car/yard, etc.
-
- The bottom line, of course, is that if you accpt the covenants
- you have to live with them; if you find them unacceptable, you'll
- either have to (a) live somewhere else, (b) try to get them changed
- through reasonable (and time-consuming) lobbying, etc., or (c)
- be a "stealthy ham" (and probably never have that world-class
- 50/144/220/432/1296 contest station you've always dreamed about).
-
- Which is why I live in the country, very far from town, and
- spend between 2.5 to 3 hours each day with my round-trip commute to
- work. Sometimes life just isn't fair.....

- Subject: Vertically Polarized Noise
- To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
-
- Why is most man-made noise vertically polarized? It's always
- stated in books, etc. Does it have to do with "vertical" wiring in
- buildings? Unclean mobile communication transmitters with vertical
- polarization? I can see how lightning can cause noise and is vertically
- polarized BUT IT AIN'T MAN-MADE.

-
- I use one for RF work where you have to make adjustments that require you to
- watch for a peak in the voltage....It's a lot easier to watch abig needle
- sweep to a peak voltage than watching a bunch of numbers rolling around.
